It's My Life! is an original musical about teens, for teens and by teens. As a stage musical it will entertain and enlighten audiences about the fascinating lives of teenagers living in Singapore. The production is crafted around stories told by teens and, inspired by their spirit, the musical excavates what is in their hearts and delves into their thoughts, their dreams, their hopes, their problems as well as their joys. It's My Life! is also a process-oriented project. It provides teens a chance to be involved in its creative development, and an opportunity to learn character-building life-skills such as determination, resilience, imaginative thinking, self-belief and confidence. The creative team ("grown-ups") act as their mentors to nurture and guide them. This is over and above the rigorous training in singing, movement, acting and design. It's MyLife! is produced by Spare Room Pte Ltd and is led by a creative team of Singapore theatre practitioners (see Creative Team). A nation-wide search was launched in November 2007 to find teenagers suitable for the project. More than 350 teens (between 15 to19 years) signed up on-line for a chance to audition either as a performer or as a designer for the musical. After a series of rigorous auditions, 39 were called back for a second round of trials. Finally on 4 December 2007, 17 talented teenagers were chosen, among them, 11 performers (whom we name "Life'rs") and 6 designers (known as "Shadows"). Since being chosen, the Life'rs have been through intensive improvisation, acting, singing and movement workshops, and Shadows had design and theatre workshops, led by the respective creative leaders. The creative team has been developing the entire musical from the stories the teens tell about their lives here in Singapore today. Issues discussed range from family to school to culture to aesthetics to their future. Drafts of the script have been publicly read and feedback obtained from a wide cross-section of the public – teachers, teens, friends, theatre practitioners. The script will continue to evolve and mature under the good hands of the creative team. Imagine - original script, songs, lyrics and choreography, created around the individual teens that have been cast!   The heart of this project is in the process - the process of excavating what is in the hearts and souls of the teens and then expressing this in the form of a musical for all to see. Each member of the team, from cast to creative team, will be given a blog space to document their thoughts, feeling, videos, photos and sounds as they journey through It's My Life!
